Digital Fabrication Investigation Progress 4/10

I split up the individual pieces and imported them into AutoCAD in order to import into Rhino.  After speaking with the CNC mill attendants, however, I learned the CNC really isn't meant to be cutting material that is as thin as I need it to be.  I'm making an appointment to use the laser cutter instead, which should work out better since it has greater precision, therefore, the pieces will probably fit together better.  I still plan on cutting out a few pieces out of wood on the CNC just to experience how it works.

  1. Your project is really progressing well, and the experiments you did in SketchUp were really interesting. Good use of the quick design tools.

The tabs will work for you, but I think you could possibly run into the problem of edges overlapping. This may lead to you having to sand them down to create neatness. just a heads up, hope everything goes well for you.

  2. This looks great!!! I'm thinking that we might have to see if we can get them to open up the laser cutter special for us sometime because the list is really filling up. I need to go look and see if I can get in for a time as well before this project is done.

  3. Now that you will be using the laser cutter, it could be interesting to play with different materials choices. Also, you now have the opportunity to score or etch the surface which would add another dimension to the project and potentially create more depth or texture.
